Using SQL Replication (CE221G )

IBM Course Code: 2E221G

This course is designed to provide you the ability to use DB2 SQL Replication to perform data replication activities between IBM relational database systems, and also between IBM relational database systems and other non-IBM relational systems. This course will also teach how to perform the IBM Replication operations to define, manage, and maintain data replication functions for DB2 for z/OS and DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows. Included are lectures and several intensive hands-on machine exercises with DB2 SQL Replication on Windows workstations using DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows.

What You'll Learn

  • Setup a DB2 Federated database in order to use InfoSphere Federated Server to replicate to non-IBM relational database systems
  • Use DB2 SQL Replication to perform data replication activities in both a multiplatform and a multivendor environment
  • Register source tables and define subscriptions using the DB2 Replication Center
  • Describe DB2 SQL Replication basic components and control tables
  • Operate the various components of DB2 SQL Replication
  • Use DB2 Replication Center to perform basic administration of sources and subscriptions
  • Discuss basic replication performance considerations
  • Identify the problem determination facilities of DB2 SQL Replication

Who Needs to Attend

This is an intermediate course for system administrators, database administrators, replication administrators, data warehouse architects, programmers, users, IBM professionals, and other individuals desiring an SQL based replication architecture. This includes all individuals who perform or support evaluation, implementation, and usage activities for data movement, data availability, and data replication.

Prerequisites

Skills or experience in the following specific areas enable you to more easily navigate the course material and facilitate in the execution of the lab exercises:

  • Relational databases
  • Database system design
  • DB2 Control Center
  • SQL
  • Workstation hardware
  • Linux desktop functionality
  • DB2 platform knowledge

Follow-On Courses

There are no follow-ons for this course.

Course Outline

Overview of DB2 SQL Replication

  • List DB2 SQL Replication features and components
  • Describe the basic component architecture
  • Discuss data staging concepts
  • Explain how the DB2 replication architecture is extended to multi-vendor data replication
  • List non-DB2 heterogeneous replication targets

Setting Up a Federated Database

  • Choose the appropriate DB2 product to set up a federated database
  • Configure access to DB2 and non-DB2 remote data sources using: Wrappers, Servers, and Nicknames

Preparing the Replication Environment

  • Start the Replication Center and use its general functions such as the tool bar, tree of folders, folder contents, and actions on folders and contents
  • Describe the control tables used by Capture and Apply
  • Create the required control tables
  • Customize the control table profile

Creating Replication Sources

  • Define tables as replication sources using the Replication Center
  • View and modify existing source registrations using the RC
  • Determine objects related to a specific registered source
  • Define profiles to simplify defining replication sources

Creating Replication Subscriptions

  • Create a subscription for a registered source using the Replication Center
  • View and modify existing subscriptions using the RC
  • Determine objects related to a specific subscription

Operating Capture and Apply

  • Start Capture in the z/OS, Linux, UNIX, and Windows platforms using operating system facilities
  • Start Apply in the z/OS, Linux, UNIX, and Windows platforms using operating system facilities
  • Use operational commands to control Apply and Capture processing
  • Start Capture and Apply using the Replication Center

Subscription Set Processing

  • Explain how Apply processes subscription sets to accomplish selected replication functions
  • Define a Replication Source which will allow Update-anywhere functions
  • Define a Replication Subscription which will allow Update-anywhere functions
